High Pressure Security Alarm Salesmen

The Better Business Bureau of Saskatchewan is warning consumers to beware of high-pressure Security Alarm salesmen going door-to-door selling alarms and services. Every year the BBB receives a number of inquiries and complaints from consumers and municipalities who have been contacted regarding the sale of home security alarms and services. This is the time of year that security alarm salesmen will be going door-to-door. The BBB offers the following tips if you are thinking about acquiring a home security alarm system.

Alert: Two New Phishing Scams Active In Saskatchewan

The BBB has received copies of two unrelated emails from Saskatchewan residents. The first is an unsolicited “job offer” from an organization with an email identifier recorded as “transairway.eu” intended to get recipients to mistakenly identify with legitimate business names like TransAir in the UK, Airtrans Airways, a legitimate airline service based in the USA and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, or Air Transat which does operate in Saskatchewan. The message was directed to a consumer at her business email address on February 18th.

Scam Alert – Phishing Scam using Occupational Health and Safety

On November 28th, the BBB was advised that a business in Saskatchewan had received a telemarketing call from an organization alleging they were calling from Occupational Health and Safety and seeking updated information through the completion and filing of some forms. The updated information required payment for or in association with the forms via a credit card. The call came from a toll free 1 (866) telephone number. Unfortunately the business had not recorded the other digits of the telephone number so a complete phone number is not yet available.

Scam Alert – Yellow Page Directory Scam is back

In November 2012, the BBB received information from 2 businesses in Saskatchewan regarding advertising that has appeared in faxed solicitations. It is clear that business owners in Saskatchewan are receiving requests soliciting information and quoting pricing in small print with layouts and names used in such a way as to influence the businesses that they are dealing with the regional yellow pages publisher in Saskatchewan, DirectWest, and in fact DirectWest was solicited directly. To date the BBB has not received copies of any invoices issued to Saskatchewan businesses or any indication from Saskatchewan businesses that they may have mistakenly paid for or contracted with this directory service.

BBB Partners with Western Union to Introduce BBB Scam Stopper

On October 9, 2012 Better Business Bureau and Western Union launched BBB Scam Stopper, (www.bbb.org/scamstopper) “Western Union devotes extensive resources to stopping fraud,” says Shelley Bernhardt, the company’s Director of Consumer Protection. “Our agents are trained to intervene if they suspect a customer is the victim of a scam. Through our partnership with BBB, we aim to give consumers the information and resources they need to protect themselves and help stop fraud before it gets that far.”

ALERT – Internet Extortion scam in Canada

On July 3 the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre issued a ransomware scam warning about new malware that locks or freezes computers. Subsequently the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in the USA confirmed that this scam is thriving and persisting in the marketplace.

Consumers report receiving unsolicited telephone calls from aggressive sales people claiming they are selling energy conservation products that will substantially reduce Hydro bills. The caller misleads consumers into thinking they are a representative of a local or provincial power company. The caller then claims that the power saver device will reduce the currents on power supplies and appliances in the consumer’s household, resulting in Hydro savings of 25% to 50%.

It’s Still Out There!

The phishing emails – the fifth wave since Thanksgiving that uses the BBB’s name – uses BBB’s name and logo in an attempt to look like a notice of a newly filed complaint. The latest round includes a ZIP attachment, but that has not always been the case.
